In 2022, Max followed Taylor on the website formerly known as Twitter because they agreed on faith and politics, and he thought she was cute. She followed him back, and for the next two years, they had a crush (what Taylor would refer to as an "emotional support crush") on one another without the other knowing.

Then in 2024, Taylor jumped into Max's DMs with a joke about Oklahoma (Max's home state—thanks for the assist, Twisters!). They started chatting, and on Taylor's birthday three weeks later, she told Max she thought he was cute with the encouragement of her best friend (and some liquid courage, admittedly). From there, they started talking on the phone multiple times a week for multiple hours at a time, and eventually visited each other in Michigan and Oklahoma.

After 11 months of long-distance dating, Max got a job in Detroit and made the 900-mile road trip move to Michigan. He and Taylor dated for another six months before he asked her to marry him, in front of the very restaurant in Detroit where they had their first IRL date.
